Light-Up Plastic Cup Ghosts

These plastic cup ghosts are a fun craft to make with kids – and they are even better when they are all lit up in a garland!

To make these ghosts we used:

  • Plastic drinking cups
  • Black contact paper
  • Scissors
  • 1″ hole punch (optional)
  • Wax paper (optional, but advisable!)
  • Craft knife
  • Battery-operated orange LED lights – I got mine from the local drugstore but you could try these or these.

I had originally intended to make these ghosts out of Styrofoam cups, but I happened to see a cheap set of orange lights and I decided to use the thin plastic cups instead!

I wanted to make the craft as simple as possible, so I decided to use black contact paper to make the face parts. No pens, no glue, no mess. I started to prepare the pieces in advance – the circle punch saved lots of time.

But then I realised one major flaw. Contact paper is SO HARD to remove from its backing. I knew my son would quickly run out of patience and we had 15 cups to decorate!

So after cutting (or punching) out a variety of face parts, I very kindly peeled the backing paper off each one and temporarily placed it on a piece of wax paper. I won’t tell you how many swear words I used but at least I was doing it in private, and not with an impatient child in front of me!

I quickly prepped each cup by cutting an X shape in the base of each one with a craft knife.

F was very happy to construct funny faces on the cups.

We worked together and finally finished all 15!

I then poked an LED light into the base of each cup. As the cups were so light they didn’t need any additional fastening.

When they were all lit up they looked so cool! My son loves them!
