Five Green and Speckled Frogs Fine Motor Activity

My son loves the song “Five Green and Speckled Frogs”, so for Fine Motor Fridays this week I made an activity to go with it.

Thank you!If you’re not familiar with the song “Five Green and Speckled Frogs” (or Five Little Speckled Frogs, as it’s also known), then here is a totally adorable video from Kiboomu:

The activity is made from three components – the frogs, the log, and the pool.  I made the frogs using an image from Clckr, adding speckles, then printing it five times and laminating it. Laminating it is quite optional but I think it looks nicer – oh and I love using my laminator! Then I used a hot glue gun to attach the laminated frog pics onto some big plastic clips that I bought from the dollar store. (And yes, I know that I have wrecked my cutting mat by using it as a hot glue gun surface!)

For the log I used a sturdy cardboard tube – from kitchen foil rather than kitchen paper as it’s smaller and thicker. I cut one end off with a craft knife, and hot glued it onto the top at an angle to make it look more “loggy”. Once the glue had dried I painted it with brown acrylic paint and added details with a brown marker pen. I covered a box in brown construction paper and hot glued the log to the box to stop it rolling around.

For the pond I glued some blue marbled construction paper to a piece of cardboard, painting another kitchen foil tube with blue paint, then hot gluing that to the centre. Then I cut some waves from blue card, and glued those on.

It all got rather more complex than I had initially envisaged, but I was pleased with the result.

Just as I was about to show F I realised that I hadn’t done anything for the “delicious bugs”. Oops! I hoped he would forgive me! As soon as I started singing the song he understood what we had to do! The clips weren’t easy to manipulate due to their size, and he needed quite a bit of strength in his fingers to squeeze the ends to get the clips on and off the tubes.

He was pretty pleased with himself when we finished the song and he wanted to do it all over again!

And here are the lyrics:

Five green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log

Eating some most delicious bugs – YUM YUM!

One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool

Then there were four green speckled frogs.

Four green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log

Eating some most delicious bugs – YUM YUM!

One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool

Then there were three green speckled frogs.

Three green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log

Eating some most delicious bugs – YUM YUM!

One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool

Then there were two green speckled frogs.

Two green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log

Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM!

One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool

Then there was one green speckled frog.

One green and speckled frog sat on a speckled log

Eating some most delicious bugs – YUM YUM!

One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool

Then there were no green speckled frogs.
