Have your kids painted bird houses? If they love nature then they will want to be a part of decorating essential shelter and nesting homes for our avian friends.

Do you think of bird houses as a spring project? I’m not so sure! According to wild bird expert Melissa Mayntz, there IS no bad time.
…they may still use the available houses as shelters from predators, cold temperatures and poor weather both before and after the nesting season.
So we decided that NOW would be a good time to decorate! My son chose a barn-shaped mini bird house and I chose a gazebo birdhouse, then we each had a fancy 2-story birdhouse to decorate.
Our paints of choice were Apple Barrel Multi Surface in Mountain Forest and Classic Caramel (suitable for both indoor and outdoor projects), plus Apple Barrel Gloss in Bright Green and Spring Green which is weather resistant.
F started on the mini bird house roof but claimed that he needed red for the rest of the “barn”, and although it didn’t go with the other colors, I gave in and provided him with Apple Barrel Gloss in Hot Rod Red.
We painted all the bird houses in stages, letting each color dry before starting the next. The paint coated the unfinished wood really well, although I did give extra coats to the roofs for additional protection.
We even remembered to paint the bases of each bird house!
We let everything fully dry overnight, then my husband attached the two-story birdhouses and the barn birdhouse to trees. The gazebo birdhouse wasn’t so easy to attach to a tree, so we’ll put it aside until the spring and put it out then in a safe place.
